01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Blue Mark, first listed as Jack Black Signature Blue Mark, is a 2005 fragrance from Jack Black, the Texas grooming brand. Fragrantica and Parfumo both credit Claude Dir. It is a fresh, spicy aromatic: bergamot, water mint and coriander over juniper, ginger and vetiver, with patchouli and pale woods in the base.

It is sold today as an eau de parfum and remains in production: a fine fragrance from a brand best known for skincare and shaving.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Jack Black was founded in 2000 by Curran Dandurand, Jeff Dandurand and Emily Dalton, and grew in the Dallas area into a leading American prestige men’s grooming brand, according to BeautyMatter and The Dallas Morning News. Both report that Edgewell Personal Care, the owner of Schick, agreed to buy the company in January 2018; The Dallas Morning News added that the founders would stay on.

Fragrantica and Parfumo date Blue Mark to 2005, five years after the brand’s launch. Both name Claude Dir as the perfumer, and Parfumo adds Yann Vasnier as a co-author. Jack Black’s own copy, as carried by Nordstrom, presents it as an eau de parfum built on “the freshest and finest essential oils,” crafted “by world-class perfumers.”

Blue Mark has a small place in Fragrance Help’s own history. When it was first listed here, the post was a product gallery with a reader poll. The brand also appears in Samuel Sayre’s account of a Jack Black shave event, and on the “Jack Black and Others” shelf of his Spring 2017 fragrance wall.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Fragrantica, Parfumo and the brand’s notes on Nordstrom agree on most of the structure. Juniper, ginger and vetiver appear in all three.

Top — bergamot, water mint and coriander (cilantro in the brand’s list): a cool, green, slightly peppery opening.
Heart — juniper and ginger with vetiver: the gin-like, spicy core that gives the fragrance its character.
Base — patchouli and pale woods, listed as white woods by the brand and driftwood by Parfumo: a dry, clean finish.

Fragrantica also lists thyme. It classes the fragrance as woody aromatic, while Parfumo’s voters describe it as spicy and fresh. Fragrantica reviewers describe a crisp, cool scent, likening it to “ginger dropped into a glass of gin.” The juniper and mint carry that effect; the vetiver and patchouli keep it from reading as a simple cologne.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Blue Mark shows a grooming brand extending into fine fragrance on its own terms. It uses the same cool, herbal vocabulary as a good shaving product: mint, juniper, ginger and vetiver. That makes it a natural companion to the brand’s shave and skincare lines, and it has stayed in the range for two decades.

It is also a useful reference for the fresh aromatic style outside the fougère. There is no lavender and coumarin core; the freshness comes from mint, citrus and gin-like juniper over a dry vetiver base, which gives a lighter and greener result than the classic barbershop structure.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

Fragrantica and Basenotes list the fragrance as Jack Black Signature Blue Mark; current retailers, including Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue, sell it as Blue Mark Eau de Parfum in a 3.4 oz (100 ml) spray. No flanker has been documented, and no reformulation has been published.

Parfumo lists Blue Mark as still in production. Since the 2018 sale to Edgewell, the brand has continued to sell it alongside its grooming range, so it is easier to find than many fragrances of its age.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a bright bergamot and mint opening, a spicy juniper and ginger heart, and a dry vetiver finish. Fragrantica reviewers note modest longevity and light projection, which makes it an easy choice for the office, warm weather and the gym bag.

Two or three sprays are enough. Reapply after a few hours if you want it to last into the evening, or pair it with an unscented moisturiser so the skin holds the fragrance longer.

IN THE TIMELINE
Its citrus-and-herb freshness goes back to an early milestone in the History of Perfume.
