English Laundry’s 2012 eau de toilette: lemon, lime and bergamot over soft florals, spice and light woods.
At a glance
Riviera is a 2012 eau de toilette from English Laundry: a light citrus fragrance that opens on lemon, lime and bergamot, moves through a soft floral and spicy heart, and dries down to sandalwood, guaiac wood and oakmoss.
Reviewers on Parfumo and Fragrantica compare it to YSL L’Homme, at a much lower price and with weaker staying power.
Creation and context
English Laundry is a clothing label created by Manchester-born designer Christopher Wicks and launched in 2009. Its fragrance line began in 2010 with Arrogant, and its scents are produced and marketed by 3B International, which both Parfumo and the official English Laundry shop name as the company behind the line.
The official shop and Parfumo both date Riviera to 2012 and sell or list it as an eau de toilette. Fragrantica gives no exact year and places it in “the 2010s.” None of the three names a perfumer. The brand’s copy sets the scene on a boat on the Riviera, promising “clean, soothing comfort,” and the blue-shaded bottle carries the line’s usual crest.
The composition
English Laundry has not published a formula, but its note list is unusually long, and Fragrantica and Parfumo reproduce it tier for tier. The main materials:
Fragrantica classifies Riviera as an aromatic spicy fragrance; Parfumo’s community calls it citrusy-fresh, fruity and powdery. Reviewers mostly describe the citrus opening and a soft, slightly powdery floral-wood accord.
Why it matters
Riviera is a good example of how reviewers place English Laundry’s scents: next to a well-known designer reference. Parfumo lists YSL L’Homme as the fragrance it most resembles, and reviewers on both Parfumo and Fragrantica call it a cheaper, less sweet or less long-lasting version of that style; Fragrantica reviewers also mention Chanel Allure Homme Sport.
A Parfumo reviewer counts Riviera among the English Laundry scents regularly found on discount racks, and Fragrantica reviewers mention prices of $12 to $15 at discounters.
Reformulation and editions
The official shop sells Riviera as an eau de toilette in 3.4 oz (100 ml) and 6.8 oz (200 ml) sizes. No reformulation is documented. When Fragrance Help first listed it, distribution was limited.
Wearing it today
Expect a strong lemon-lime burst that softens within the first hour into a light, clean floral-woody skin scent. Parfumo users give it the lowest longevity ratings of the English Laundry scents covered here, and Fragrantica reviewers agree that it fades quickly.
Use it as a warm-weather, after-shower or office scent, and reapply. One Parfumo reviewer puts it simply: longevity is poor, “but the price reflects that. Just reapply.”
