01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Bleu de Chanel is a Chanel fragrance composed by Jacques Polge and launched on 13 September 2010 as an eau de toilette. It is a woody aromatic: grapefruit, lemon and mint over ginger and nutmeg, on a base of incense, cedar, sandalwood and vetiver.

It became Chanel’s commercial anchor in men’s fragrance and one of the best-selling masculines of its decade, and it is widely credited with defining the modern “blue” fragrance.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Bleu de Chanel was the first new fragrance in this line of Chanel’s work since Allure Homme Sport in 2004. By 2010 Jacques Polge had been the house perfumer for more than thirty years, with Antaeus, Égoïste and Allure Homme among his work.

The launch was built for scale. Martin Scorsese directed the first film, starring the French actor Gaspard Ulliel and set to the Rolling Stones’ “She Said Yeah”. Ulliel remained the face of the fragrance for twelve years, through films by James Gray (2015) and Steve McQueen (2018), until his death in January 2022. Timothée Chalamet followed as ambassador from 2023.

The response was immediate. Wikipedia reports that it was the top Christmas seller at Bloomingdale’s in 2010, the chain’s biggest men’s fragrance launch to that point, and the second best-selling men’s fragrance in 2011 and 2012. It won Best New Male Fragrance at the Fragrance Foundation Awards in 2011.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Chanel has not published the formula. The structure below uses the notes that Wikipedia and Fragrantica both list for the original eau de toilette.

Top — grapefruit, lemon, mint and pink pepper: a sharp, bright citrus opening.
Heart — ginger, nutmeg and jasmine, with Iso E Super giving the diffuse, woody radiance that carries the whole composition.
Base — incense, cedar, vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, labdanum and white musk.

The construction is a fresh citrus-aromatic top set against a dry, resinous woody base, with a synthetic woody material doing much of the linking work. The incense and labdanum give it more depth than the “fresh” category usually allows, which is a large part of its appeal.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Bleu de Chanel did not invent the fresh woody fragrance, but it set the template the category followed for the next decade: citrus and spice at the top, a clean woody-ambery base, a blue bottle and a cinematic campaign. Fragrantica describes it as having established the modern “blue” fragrance category, and many of the best-selling men’s launches of the 2010s answer to it.

For Chanel it closed a gap. The house’s earlier releases in this register, from Pour Monsieur to Égoïste, built its reputation with connoisseurs. Bleu de Chanel gave it a woody aromatic with the reach of its best-known fragrances, joining No 5 and Coco Mademoiselle as one of the house’s commercial pillars, and it remains among the best-selling men’s fragrances in several markets.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

The eau de parfum followed in 2014, also by Jacques Polge. It is warmer and more ambery than the original, and Fragrantica’s notes for it add amber and sandalwood-led woods. The Parfum followed in 2018, composed by his son Olivier Polge, who succeeded him as Chanel’s perfumer.

The three are distinct compositions, not simply stronger dilutions of one formula, and reviewers disagree about which is best. Chanel has not documented any reformulation of the original eau de toilette. The line has continued to collect awards: Wikipedia lists Fragrance of the Year (Men’s Luxury) and Media Campaign of the Year at the 2019 Fragrance Foundation Awards.

Samuel Sayre, who has owned both the eau de toilette and the eau de parfum, found one of the pair fresh and the other smooth: a real contrast, and a good reason to sample them side by side before choosing.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a sharp grapefruit-and-mint opening that settles within the hour into dry incense and cedar with a soft musk trail. The eau de toilette is the brightest and most versatile; the eau de parfum is warmer and suits cooler weather and evenings, and the Parfum is worth sampling beside both. It is so widely worn that it reads as familiar, so if you want something less common, Chanel’s earlier releases such as Pour Monsieur and Égoïste are worth a try. Two to four sprays are plenty; the Iso E Super and woods project further than the fresh opening suggests.
