Hugo Boss’s 2015 woodier, spicier Boss Bottled: apple, orange blossom and cinnamon over sandalwood, cedar and vetiver.
At a glance
Boss Bottled Intense is a Hugo Boss eau de toilette, launched in early 2015 as a stronger, woodier reading of the 1998 Boss Bottled. It keeps the original’s apple and spice: apple, orange blossom and bergamot over cinnamon, clove and geranium, on sandalwood, cedar and vetiver.
An eau de parfum with the same name followed in 2016. This profile covers the 2015 eau de toilette and notes the differences.
Creation and context
Fragrantica and Parfumo both date the eau de toilette to 2015, and Now Smell This announced it on 19 February 2015. None of the three credits a perfumer, so the author is not publicly documented. Annick Menardo composed the 1998 original, but none of these sources credits her with the Intense.
The brand’s own description, quoted by both Fragrantica and Now Smell This, presents it as a version with more woods and spices and a higher concentration of precious oils, “less sweet, yet more luxurious”. Now Smell This classifies it as an oriental fougère and lists 50 ml and 100 ml eau de toilette.
It arrived with the Scottish actor Gerard Butler as the face of the Bottled line. Parfumo names him as the face of the Intense, and his Man of Today campaign for Boss Bottled was announced in July 2014, as reported by The Candy Perfume Boy and the Malay Mail. The line was then produced by Procter & Gamble; Parfumo lists Coty as its most recent marketer.
The composition
Hugo Boss has not published the formula. The structure below uses the notes named by at least two of Fragrantica, Parfumo and Now Smell This.
Fragrantica’s database adds cardamom, lavender, vanilla and coumarin; Parfumo adds lemon, rosewood and olive wood. The structure follows Boss Bottled closely. The main changes are orange blossom in place of plum at the top and a heavier woody base, which is why Fragrantica and Now Smell This both describe it as less sweet than the original.
Why it matters
Boss Bottled Intense is a textbook example of how a best-seller is extended: the same bottle shape and apple-cinnamon idea, with a stronger concentration and darker woods for buyers who want more of what they already know.
Its eau de parfum sibling became the more successful of the two. Parfumo users rate the 2016 eau de parfum higher than the eau de toilette, and it has far more ratings, which suggests where buyers settled. For many wearers today, “Bottled Intense” means the eau de parfum.
Reformulation and editions
Fragrantica and Parfumo date the eau de parfum to 2016. Parfumo lists the same notes for both and treats the eau de parfum as a concentration variant of the eau de toilette. The rest of the family includes the 1998 Boss Bottled, Boss Bottled Night and, more recently, an eau de parfum, a parfum and an Elixir of the original.
Parfumo describes the eau de toilette as “last marketed by Coty”, so it may now be harder to find than the eau de parfum. Check the label: the two share a name but not a concentration.
Wearing it today
Expect the familiar Boss Bottled apple, a little brighter from the orange blossom, then more cinnamon and clove, and a drier woody base than the original. Parfumo users rate its longevity and sillage above the 1998 eau de toilette.
It suits autumn and winter, evenings and dressier settings. If you want more strength still, try the eau de parfum; if you want lighter daytime wear, go back to the original.
