Understanding Cosmetic Labeling Regulations

There are no regulations or requirements under current United States law that require cosmetic manufacturers to print expiration dates on the labels of cosmetic products, but cosmetic firms have a responsibility for the safety of their products. Here’s where to learn more about shelf life and expiration dating.

The FDA does not require expiration dates on cosmetic products, a policy that I find deeply concerning. Without mandated expiration labeling, consumers are often left unaware of when their makeup, skincare, or fragrances may become ineffective or even harmful. Over time, cosmetic formulas can degrade, leading to changes in texture, scent, and efficacy, while expired products can harbor bacteria that may cause skin irritation or infections. Given the extensive research and testing that go into these formulations, it is baffling that there is no standardized system in place to inform users of their safe lifespan. Transparency in expiration dating should be a priority in the cosmetics industry to ensure both product integrity and consumer safety.
