01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Romance is a Ralph Lauren eau de parfum launched in 1998 and composed by Harry Frémont of Firmenich. It is a clean, fresh rose with a citrusy edge, softened by lily, lotus and white violet and set on white musk, oakmoss and patchouli.

It won the Fragrance Foundation’s FiFi award for women’s fragrance of the year in 1999 and remains one of the brand’s core women’s scents.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Ralph Lauren’s fragrances have usually been named after an image from the clothing, and Romance continued that habit. It arrived after the fresh sport launches of the mid-1990s, and its perfumer, Harry Frémont, had co-written CK One (1994) with Alberto Morillas at Firmenich. Fragrantica, Parfumo and Osmoz all credit Romance to Frémont and date it to 1998.

Osmoz’s account of the launch centres on the rose. It says the perfumer, who is also a botanist, based the fragrance on a rose with a characteristic citrus scent, and that Ralph Lauren was given the plant as a present. The same source says Romance became a best-seller in the United States shortly after its release.

The advertising was part of its success. Osmoz describes the campaign’s “nose kiss”, and Wikipedia’s list of FiFi winners records that Romance also took the 1999 award for best national advertising campaign. Osmoz compares the bottle’s decoration to the lace of a bridal veil.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Ralph Lauren has not published a full formula. The structure below uses notes named by at least two of Fragrantica, Parfumo and Osmoz; the three sources place a few materials in different tiers.

Top — rose with a citrus accent, ginger, freesia and chamomile; Parfumo and Osmoz add marigold.
Heart — lily, lotus, white violet and carnation: watery, clean florals rather than heavy white flowers.
Base — white musk, oakmoss, patchouli and exotic woods.

The effect is a rose made light and transparent. Ginger and citrus sharpen the opening, the lotus and lily keep the heart airy, and the musks give the powdery, freshly laundered finish that Parfumo’s community lists among its main accords. It is closer to the clean florals of the late 1990s than to the dense, jammy roses of earlier decades.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Romance is one of Ralph Lauren’s most durable fragrances, and its 1999 FiFi award put it among the defining American launches of the late 1990s. Wikipedia’s list of winners shows it taking the prize a year after Clinique Happy and a year before Gucci Rush.

It also defined a style. Its rose is fresh, citrusy and musky rather than sweet, a clean interpretation that suited the minimal, transparent taste of the decade and still reads as polished rather than old-fashioned.

The name became a small franchise. A men’s fragrance, Romance Men, won the Fragrance Foundation’s men’s prestige award in 2000, according to both the Foundation and Wikipedia, and the line has since carried flankers such as Romance Silver.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

Romance was launched as an eau de parfum, the concentration shown on the featured bottle. The Romance name has since covered a companion line and several flankers, each a separate composition, so read the box before relying on a note list.

The Ralph Lauren fragrance licence is held by L’Oréal, which Parfumo lists as the current marketer. No specific reformulation of the eau de parfum has been documented, but Osmoz user comments from the 2010s questioned whether it had changed, and oakmoss, one of its base notes, has been restricted by IFRA since 2008. Compare an older bottle with a new one if the difference matters to you.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a bright, slightly spicy rose at first, then a soft, watery floral heart and a clean musky base. It is easy to wear by day and at work, and suits spring and summer especially well. Two sprays are enough for most settings. Parfumo’s users rate its longevity and sillage as moderate, so a midday touch-up helps on long days.

If you find classic roses heavy or powdery, Romance is a good place to start. If you want more depth, compare it with rose fragrances that use oud or patchouli more prominently.
