01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Galloway is a citrus eau de parfum from the French niche house Parfums de Marly, introduced in 2013 and named after a Scottish horse. It pairs citrus and pepper with orange blossom and iris, over a base of amber and musk.

It is one of the house’s quieter, fresher compositions: clean, lightly spicy and easy to wear, with more structure than a simple citrus cologne.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Parfums de Marly was founded by Julien Sprecher. Wikipedia dates the house to 2009 and says its name comes from the Château de Marly, the residence of Louis XV, and the brand’s own site says Sprecher set out to take inspiration from the spirit of 18th-century France. The Perfume Society quotes the house on why: in that century, “horses and perfume were the pride and glory of France.” Many of its fragrances are named after horses.

Galloway continues that theme. Now Smell This reported it in January 2014 alongside Darcy, describing it as a citrus fragrance “introduced in 2013 and named for the Scottish horse”, sold as a 120 ml eau de parfum. Parfumo also gives 2013; Fragrantica lists it under 2014, the year of the wider launch reports.

Fragrantica credits the composition to Michel Girard. No second source confirms the credit, so treat it as Fragrantica’s.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Now Smell This, Fragrantica and Parfumo agree on the core of the formula. Parfumo adds sandalwood to the base; the other two do not list it.

Top — Citrus and pepper: a bright, dry opening with a spicy bite rather than sweetness.
Heart — Orange blossom and iris: a clean floral centre, with iris adding a cool, slightly powdery texture.
Base — Amber and musk, with sandalwood per Parfumo: a soft, warm and clean finish.

Fragrantica classifies it as citrus aromatic, and Parfumo’s users rate its main accords as fresh, spicy, citrus, woody and floral. The pepper is what separates it from a classic cologne. It gives the opening an edge, and the iris and musk carry the freshness longer than a traditional citrus structure would.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Galloway is not a landmark in the historical sense, but it shows what the niche market of the 2010s looked like. Parfums de Marly is one of the houses that built a luxury identity through story and presentation, here French royal history and horse breeding, rather than through a long heritage.

It also shows how the old citrus cologne was adapted to modern expectations. The citrus and orange blossom of the eau de Cologne are still there, but pepper, iris, musk and amber turn a short-lived splash into a full eau de parfum that lasts through a working day. Fragrance Help includes it in its five citrus picks for summer.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

Galloway has been sold as a 120 ml eau de parfum since launch, according to Now Smell This and Fragrantica. Parfumo reports that it is still in production. No reformulation or flanker has been documented.

As with any popular niche fragrance, buy from the brand or authorised retailers and check the batch code and packaging if you buy on the secondary market.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a sharp citrus-and-pepper opening, a soft orange blossom and iris heart, and a clean amber-musk base. Parfumo users rate its longevity and sillage as moderate to good.

Fragrantica’s summary describes it as versatile and suited to both work and casual wear, and its freshness makes it especially easy in warm weather. Three or four sprays are enough; in cooler months the amber and musk base comes forward.
