A clothing tag turned into a perfume label: each bottle a dated memory, reproduced.
Overview
Maison Margiela is a Paris fashion house founded in 1988 by the Belgian designer Martin Margiela. Its fragrances are made under licence by L’Oréal. The agreement was signed in 2008 and the first scent, (untitled), followed in 2010.
The fragrance business rests on Replica, a line begun in 2012 in which each scent is presented as the reproduction of a remembered place and moment. Jazz Club, Lazy Sunday Morning and By the Fireplace are three of its long-running entries.
Every Maison Margiela fragrance I track is in the Catalog.
Founding and early history
Martin Margiela opened the house in Paris in 1988, and Wikipedia records Jenny Meirens as its co-founder. The house became known for blank clothing labels and for reworking existing garments. A 1994 line called Replica reproduced found clothing and accessories, and the fragrance line later took its name.
Renzo Rosso’s Only The Brave group took a majority stake in 2002. Martin Margiela left in 2009, and the collections were signed by the studio until John Galliano was appointed creative director in October 2014. Wikipedia dates the change of name from Maison Martin Margiela to Maison Margiela to 2015.
The fragrance agreement came late in that sequence. L’Oréal’s Luxury Products Division and Maison Martin Margiela announced it in April 2008, and the founder had gone before the first bottle was sold. Now Smell This reported a debut for (untitled) at Colette in Paris in January 2010.
The sources disagree on one date. L’Oréal’s brand page gives 2009 for the first fragrance; Fragrantica and Now Smell This give 2010.
House style
The house style is the framing device. Each Replica bottle carries a label modelled on the house’s clothing tags, with a title and a place and a year. Beach Walk is Calvi 1972 and By the Fireplace is Chamonix 1971.
The compositions are figurative rather than abstract. They aim at a recognisable scene and use legible accords to reach it: sun cream and coconut for a beach, tobacco and rum for a bar, aldehydes and musk for clean linen.
(untitled) stands apart from this. It is a sharp green built on galbanum, boxwood and incense, and it belongs to an older idea of the designer fragrance as a single austere statement.
Since 2016 the line has also carried Eau de Parfum compositions the house calls fantasies, built around imagined rather than remembered scenes.
Key fragrances
Perfumers
The house has no perfumer of its own. Each fragrance is commissioned from an outside perfumer, and most are credited. Daniela Andrier wrote (untitled), and Now Smell This credits her with the 2011 follow-up (untitled) L’Eau as well.
The early Replica scents came from Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and Marie Salamagne, who share the credit for all three 2012 launches. Salamagne returned alone for By the Fireplace and Cavallier Belletrud for the two 2019 releases.
Later names include Louise Turner, Aliénor Massenet and Carlos Benaïm. Violaine Collas and Fanny Bal wrote much of the line between 2017 and 2021. Olivier Cresp is credited with From the Garden (2023), and Maurice Roucel with Matcha Meditation (2021).
Several Replica fragrances have no perfumer credited, Lipstick On and Music Festival among them.
Ownership and business history
The fashion house belongs to OTB, the Italian group led by Renzo Rosso. Rosso became its majority shareholder in 2002.
The fragrances are a licence, not an in-house business. L’Oréal’s Luxury Products Division signed with Maison Martin Margiela in April 2008, and the brand now sits within L’Oréal Luxe as Maison Margiela Fragrances. The term of the licence has not been disclosed.
L’Oréal states that the Replica line extended to candles, diffusers and a bath and body range in 2020, and that refill sets for four fragrances followed in 2022.
I chart who makes and licenses this house’s fragrances on the Fragrance License Map.
Present position
Glenn Martens succeeded John Galliano as creative director in January 2025. The fragrance business is run by L’Oréal and keeps its own calendar.
Fragrantica lists 50 Maison Margiela fragrances, the newest dated 2026. That year brought Scentsorium, a set of six parfums the house presents as haute parfumerie. It also brought Letter Never Sent, a Replica fragrance sold only in Tokyo.
Several earlier Replica scents are no longer shown on the house’s own sites, among them Funfair Evening, Tea Escape and At the Barber’s.
Historical assessment
Replica solved a problem most licensed fragrance lines never solve: it gave the product a reason to exist that came from the fashion house itself. The label, the dated memory and the uniform bottle all descend from Margiela’s clothing.
The compositions are less radical than the framing. I find most of them well made, literal and easy to wear, which is the opposite of what the founder’s clothes were. (untitled) remains the one fragrance that smells like the house rather than like the scene on its label.
The line also showed that a single concept could carry dozens of releases without leaning on one hero name and its flankers. Whether Scentsorium adds anything to that is too early to say.
