01 — OVERVIEW

Overview

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was founded in Paris in 2009 by the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and his business partner Marc Chaya. It is a perfumer’s own house: every fragrance in the catalogue is credited to Kurkdjian, who had made his name fourteen years earlier with Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier.

Its commercially decisive release is Baccarat Rouge 540, a saffron, jasmine and amber-wood composition first made for the crystal maker Baccarat. LVMH has held a majority stake in the house since 2017.

Every Maison Francis Kurkdjian fragrance I track is in the Catalog.

02 — FOUNDING AND EARLY HISTORY

Founding and early history

Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969 and graduated from the ISIPCA perfumery school in Versailles in 1993. He joined the composition house Quest International, where he composed Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1995 at the age of twenty-five. In 2001 he opened a bespoke fragrance atelier, making one-off perfumes for private clients while continuing to compose for other brands.

The house followed in 2009. Now Smell This reported the first boutique opening at 5 rue d’Alger in Paris that September with seven fragrances. They were Aqua Universalis and three pairs: APOM, Lumière Noire and the colognes Pour le Matin and Pour le Soir. The same report listed scented laundry detergent, incense papers and candles beside them. The Impression puts the opening range at 25 products.

The fragrance that changed the house began outside it. Baccarat commissioned a scent from Kurkdjian for its 250th anniversary, and it first appeared as a limited edition of 250 numbered crystal bottles. The name records the 540 degrees at which Baccarat fuses clear crystal with gold powder to make its red.

Sources date the steps differently. Dazed places the commission in 2013 and the public release in 2015. FashionNetwork places the Baccarat edition in 2014 and the house bottle in the Paris shops from January 2016, while Harper’s Bazaar Arabia dates the launch itself to January 2016. Fragrantica dates the house edition 2015 and Parfumo 2016.

03 — HOUSE STYLE

House style

The house presents its collection as a fragrance wardrobe: a set of scents for different hours and moods rather than a single signature. The naming follows the idea. Pour le Matin and Pour le Soir are morning and evening; the Aqua scents are the bright daytime register; Grand Soir is the amber for going out.

Two things run through most of the work. The first is a polished cleanliness built on citrus, orange blossom and musk, clearest in Aqua Universalis. The second is radiance: compositions that are dense in material yet read as luminous and carry a long way.

Baccarat Rouge 540 is the type case of the second. Saffron and jasmine sit over an amber-wood base with a burnt-sugar sweetness and a mineral ambergris facet. The notes listed for it include Hedione and ethyl maltol, and Harper’s Bazaar Arabia attributes its savoury quality to an overdose of Ambroxan. The effect is sweet, airy and unusually diffusive.

The oud line shows the same hand in a heavier key. OUD (2012) and the three Oud Mood scents of 2013 set oud beside rose, saffron and vanilla. The wood is treated as something smooth and polished rather than animalic.

04 — KEY FRAGRANCES

Key fragrances

Aqua Universalis, 2009 — Francis Kurkdjian; bergamot, white flowers and musk; one of the seven opening scents and the house’s clean register in its plainest form.
APOM, 2009 — Francis Kurkdjian; orange blossom over cedar; issued as a pair and reworked into a single scent in 2024.
Lumière Noire, 2009 — Francis Kurkdjian; a pair of spiced rose and patchouli scents; no longer on the house’s own site.
Absolue Pour le Soir, 2010 — Francis Kurkdjian; rose, honey and cumin; an animalic evening scent reissued in refreshed form in 2024.
OUD, 2012 — Francis Kurkdjian; Laotian oud with saffron and cedar; followed in 2013 by the Silk, Velvet and Cashmere Oud Mood scents.
À la rose, 2014 — Francis Kurkdjian; Damascena and Centifolia rose with pear and lychee facets over musk.
Baccarat Rouge 540, 2015 — Francis Kurkdjian; saffron, jasmine and amber woods; Fragrantica dates it 2015 and Parfumo 2016. The extrait followed in 2017.
Grand Soir, 2016 — Francis Kurkdjian; labdanum, benzoin and vanilla; the house’s amber.
Gentle Fluidity, 2019 — Francis Kurkdjian; two distinct scents under one name, a Gold Edition and a Silver Edition; juniper and nutmeg over musks.
Kurky, 2025 — Francis Kurkdjian; fruit sweets over white musk and vanilla; the newest name in the range.
05 — PERFUMERS

Perfumers

The house has one perfumer. Fragrantica lists no one but Kurkdjian for its fragrances, and Parfumo credits him throughout. That sets it apart from the commissioning model of Frédéric Malle or Le Labo, where the founders direct and others compose.

His work outside the house is extensive. Wikipedia credits him with Narciso Rodriguez For Her (2003) alongside Christine Nagel and with Burberry Her (2018) for Burberry. FashionUnited credits him with Eau Noire and Cologne Blanche for Dior’s Collection Privée.

In October 2021 Parfums Christian Dior named him perfume creation director, and he kept his role as creative director of his own house. Wikipedia lists J’adore L’Or (2023) and Sauvage Eau Forte (2024) among his work for Dior.

06 — OWNERSHIP AND BUSINESS HISTORY

Ownership and business history

For its first eight years the house was run by its two founders. Chaya served as chief executive while Kurkdjian composed; Cosmetics Business notes that Chaya had spent twelve years at Ernst & Young.

In March 2017 LVMH announced that it would take a majority stake. Neither the price nor the size of the stake was disclosed. Both founders stayed on as shareholders, Chaya as chief executive and Kurkdjian as creative director. Premium Beauty News reported the house present in 40 countries at the time.

In spring 2026 Chaya stepped down as president and chief executive. He became a strategic adviser to Véronique Courtois, who heads LVMH’s beauty division. The Impression reports Courtois as interim president of the house, with the permanent structure not yet decided.

This is a group-owned house rather than a licence. I chart who makes and licenses this house’s fragrances on the Fragrance License Map.

07 — PRESENT POSITION

Present position

Maison Francis Kurkdjian today is a luxury fragrance house inside LVMH with Baccarat Rouge 540 as its anchor. Fragrantica lists 68 fragrances for it, dated from 2009 to 2026.

The anchor has become a line of its own. An extrait followed in 2017, and Dazed lists a hair mist, body care and a candle built on the same scent. A numbered Édition Millésime in red crystal arrived in 2025; Dazed reports 54 bottles a year at $28,000 each.

Its reach is cultural as much as commercial. Dazed reports that it was the most-viewed fragrance on TikTok worldwide in 2023 and describes it as one of the best-selling luxury fragrances in the world.

Recent catalogue work has been revision. The two Absolue scents returned in refreshed form in 2024, and a single APOM replaced the original pair that year. New versions of the colognes Pour le Matin and Pour le Soir followed in 2026. Kurky (2025) is the newest name and sits in the gourmand register.

08 — HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT

Historical assessment

I think the house has to be judged in two parts, because one fragrance has outgrown it. Baccarat Rouge 540 is a real piece of perfumery: an abstract, radiant amber that smelled like nothing else when it appeared and now smells like a great many things. The number of scents built to resemble it is the measure of that. Hearing it called common is the price of having defined a style.

The rest of the catalogue is better than a one-fragrance reputation suggests. Absolue Pour le Soir, Grand Soir and the oud scents are serious work, and Aqua Universalis is as good a clean musk as I know. What the house lacks is range of authorship: one hand, one polish and one idea of radiance. That consistency is its strength and its ceiling.

The open question is attention. Kurkdjian now directs perfume creation at Dior as well, and his co-founder has left the chief executive’s chair. I will be watching whether the house keeps producing new ideas or settles into tending its bestseller.
