01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Nightfall Patchouli is a 2015 eau de parfum in Carolina Herrera’s Confidential collection, the house’s higher-priced line. It is a spicy, resinous patchouli: bergamot and labdanum at the top, rose, iris and cinnamon in the heart, and patchouli with Siam benzoin in the base.

Carolina Herrera presents it as a portrait of New York at night, and it is sold for both women and men.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Fragrantica and Parfumo both date Nightfall Patchouli to 2015, and both place it in the Confidential collection. The Carolina Herrera fragrance business belongs to the Spanish group Puig, which Parfumo lists as its marketer. Confidential sits apart from the mass-prestige 212, CH and Good Girl families as a smaller, higher-priced line positioned closer to niche perfumery.

Carolina Herrera says the collection draws on “the most intimate and personal memories of the Herrera family”, and describes this scent as “an aromatic journey to the fantastic night-time universe of New York”.

Parfumo credits the composition to the perfumer Christophe Raynaud; Carolina Herrera’s product page does not name a perfumer, so treat that credit as Parfumo’s. When this post first appeared on Fragrance Help, it was sold in the United States as a Nordstrom exclusive. Availability may have changed since, so check the brand and its current retailers.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Carolina Herrera, Fragrantica and Parfumo give the same materials, with small differences in where they sit in the pyramid. This is Carolina Herrera’s arrangement:

Top — Bergamot and labdanum: a bright citrus flash over a dark, leathery-ambery resin from the start.
Heart — Bulgarian rose and iris, with cinnamon: a powdery floral centre warmed by spice. Fragrantica and Parfumo both put the cinnamon here.
Base — Patchouli and Siam benzoin: earthy, woody and balsamic, with a vanilla-like sweetness from the benzoin.

Carolina Herrera calls its family “woody ambery spicy”; Fragrantica calls it woody spicy, and Parfumo’s users rate its main accords as spicy, sweet, oriental, earthy and woody. In practice the patchouli is framed rather than bare. Rose and iris soften its earthiness, and benzoin and labdanum give it a rounded, ambery body rather than the damp, camphorous edge patchouli can have on its own.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Nightfall Patchouli is a good example of how designer houses moved into niche territory in the 2010s. Instead of building a new brand, Carolina Herrera created an in-house premium line with richer materials, a higher price and a more personal story, and used it to reach buyers who might otherwise go to niche houses. The same model runs through collections at Gucci, Armani and others.

It also belongs to an old tradition. Bergamot and labdanum are two pillars of the classic chypre accord, and patchouli with warm resins is the backbone of the woody oriental. Nightfall Patchouli combines both in a smooth, modern way, with rose and iris to keep it wearable.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

Nightfall Patchouli has been sold as a 100 ml eau de parfum. No reformulation or flanker has been documented.

Carolina Herrera describes the bottle as purple faceted glass with golden details, in keeping with the collection’s jewel-like presentation. As with any collection line, individual scents can be rotated out; if you find it at a discount, check the batch code and the condition of the box.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a quick burst of bergamot, then cinnamon, rose and iris over a warm, resinous patchouli that settles into a soft benzoin sweetness. Parfumo users rate its longevity above average and its sillage as moderate.

It suits cooler weather and evenings, for either sex. Start with one or two sprays: resin-and-patchouli bases build on clothing, and a light application reads as polished rather than heavy.
