01 — AT A GLANCE

At a glance

Bvlgari Aqva pour Homme Marine, usually shortened to Aqva Marine, is a Bvlgari eau de toilette launched in 2008 and composed by Jacques Cavallier. It is a light aquatic: grapefruit and neroli over Posidonia seaweed and rosemary, on white cedar and a mineral amber.

It is the first flanker to Aqva pour Homme (2005), and a cleaner, more transparent version of that fragrance’s deep-sea idea.

02 — CREATION AND CONTEXT

Creation and context

Fragrantica, Parfumo, Basenotes and Now Smell This all date Aqva Marine to 2008 and credit Jacques Cavallier, who had composed the original Aqva pour Homme three years earlier. Cavallier had also written L’Eau d’Issey (1992), one of the fragrances that defined the aquatic genre.

The two Aqva fragrances set out to capture opposite sides of the sea. Now Smell This quotes Cavallier on the original, “my inspiration for Aqva Pour Homme came from deep water”, and on Marine: “For Aqva Pour Homme Marine, I thought of the color and transparency of crystalline water.” Bvlgari’s launch copy, as reproduced by Fragrantica, says it was designed to “evoke the natural freshness and the strength of the ocean”.

Now Smell This also reports a Bvlgari representative telling Cosmetics International (November 2007) that Marine would “definitely appeal to younger men and women, especially in Asia”. The bottle is the round Aqva flacon in pale sea-blue glass, as the packaging shows.

03 — THE COMPOSITION

The composition

Bvlgari’s own list, repeated by Fragrantica and Now Smell This, names Posidonia oceanica seaweed, neroli, grapefruit, rosemary and white cedar. The pyramid below combines that list with Parfumo and Fragrantica; notes named by one database only are marked.

Top — grapefruit and neroli (Now Smell This: neroli bigarade); Fragrantica adds mandarin and petitgrain.
Heart — Posidonia seaweed (Parfumo: Neptune grass) and rosemary (Parfumo and Now Smell This: rosemary blossom); Fragrantica adds watery notes, and Now Smell This lists sap.
Base — white cedar and amber (Parfumo: mineral amber).

Posidonia oceanica, or Neptune grass, is a seagrass that Now Smell This notes “grows profusely in Mediterranean and Australian waters”; it also appears in the original Aqva, and the same review describes its effect as “light, clean, slightly salty and reedy”. Basenotes classifies Marine as aquatic, and its reviewers describe a salt-water scent with a strong water-and-seaweed presence. Where the original Aqva is dark and slightly oily with santolina, Marine is sheer, citrusy and airy.

04 — WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Aqva Marine describes the sea through a named natural material, Posidonia seaweed, with citrus and herbs, rather than through an abstract ozonic accord alone. It shows how the genre that Cavallier helped create with L’Eau d’Issey was still being refined by the same perfumer sixteen years later.

It has divided critics. Now Smell This found it bland next to the original Aqva and short-lived on skin, while Basenotes reviewers are split between those who find it “mediocre and average” and those who value its authentic marine character.

05 — REFORMULATION AND EDITIONS

Reformulation and editions

Aqva Marine launched as an eau de toilette, and Now Smell This lists it in 30, 50 and 100 ml sizes. In 2011 Bvlgari issued Aqva pour Homme Marine Toniq, also by Cavallier, with grapefruit, pear, Neptune grass and an ice accord, which Parfumo records as discontinued. The Aqva family later grew to include Aqva Amara (2014).

No reformulation has been documented in the sources reviewed here. Parfumo lists LVMH, Bvlgari’s parent group since 2011, as its current marketer.

06 — WEARING IT TODAY

Wearing it today

Expect a quick grapefruit and neroli opening, a salty seaweed and rosemary heart, and a clean cedar drydown. Parfumo users rate its longevity and sillage in the moderate range, and Now Smell This found it short-lived, so it is a scent to reapply rather than to rely on all day.

It suits hot weather, the beach and casual daytime wear. If you want more depth and a darker sea note, try the original Aqva pour Homme; for a warmer, resinous version, try Aqva Amara.
